Nick:
So how many generations shared a house when you were young, Mrs Ha?
Mrs Ha:
Well, unlike today, people of my generation mostly lived in extended families.
Nick:
Really? How many of you were there?
Mrs Ha:
Nine. My grandparents, my uncle, his wife and kids, my parents and me.
Nick:
And, did you each have a private room like now?
Mrs Ha:
No, we shared most things…, even the bedrooms and bathroom.
Nick:
I can’t imagine! How about meals?
Mrs Ha:
Meal times were great because we could have time together every day. We talked about our day, problems at work, or things happening in the village.
Nick:
It sounds great. So who did the shopping and cooking?
Mrs Ha:
Mostly my grandma. She was very hardworking… and kind, caring, and tolerant.
Nick:
Wow. You all must have been tolerant to get along so well!
Mrs Ha:
Yes, this is especially true when it came to decision making.
Nick:
What happened then?
Mrs Ha:
We didn’t always agree… but we learned to talk, listen and compromise… or grandad made the final decision and we followed …
Nick:
Hmm, sounds fascinating! …

If you live in an extended family, it means there are always some people who are willing to help you whenever you need. It is very beneficial, if you are in a bad situation.

It is good extended families to live together for all of the house expenses. If you live in a city, you must pay rent, gas and electricity bills as well as for credit cards… etc. It is really hard to pay them alone, but if you live with your extended family it means, you can share all the expenses.

The close-knit relationship it offers to children can contribute positively to their emotional development. An extended family is also the closest form of society children have. Having more people in the house often helps small children learn how to act and behave in various situations.

Extended families are families where three or more generations are living in the same house. Extended family like any other thing has advantages as well as disadvantages. So, a person needs to have three qualities to be able to get along with other members in an extended family. First of all, if you live in an extended family, you’d have to be a patient person because you’d be living with lots of others and if you weren’t patient, it could lead to problems. You’d have to wait your turn for everything – the bathroom, the food… Moreover, you need to ready to share. Because, if you live in a city, you must pay rent, gas and electricity bills as well as for credit cards… etc. It is really hard to pay them alone, but if you live with your extended family it means, you can share all the expenses. Furthermore, you’d have to be help people with all your heart. If you live in an extended family, it means there are always some people who are willing to help you whenever you need. It is very beneficial, if you are in a bad situation. For instance, one of my friends lives with his grandfather. He had a terrible accident last week and his grandfather who has been retired looked after him all week. This experience thought me that, extendedP families to live together are good for everyone when they need help.
