Thank you for coming to listen to my talk about the urban world in 2050. You see, by 2050, 70 per cent of the world's people will live in cities. And life in big cities will be very different from what it is like today. Energy, especially oil, will be very expensive because natural resources are running out due to the excessive exploitation. As a result, many people will probably work at home, or have their workplaces close to where they live. They don't want to spend much of their income and time travelling to and from the workplaces too far from homes. Also, too many people living in big cities will be a burden on the infrastructure. It will be difficult to provide enough water, gas and electricity for really big cities, so these will probably stop growing. Many people from the countryside will move to smaller cities rather than to big cities because life in smaller cities is more suitable to young people, especially those coming from the countryside. There will be many other changes that I can't cover in my talk today. Hopefully, we will have another chance to discuss these changes in more detail.

We now live in Hanoi, the capital city of Vietnam. We guess that in 2050, the suburbs of Hanoi will become more and more developed. There will be more skyscrapers, offices and companies based in those suburbs. People will no longer have to move to the crowded and noisy city centre to do their jobs or enjoy entertaining and cultural activities as these things will become available and very convenient outside the city. Instead, they will likely choose to live far from the city centre. However, one thing still concerning us is the development of infrastructure in the suburbs that won't meet the demand of high population density. As a result, we will be stuck in traffic jams during rush hour like what we suffer now in the city centre. We hope that Hanoi Urban Metro and other modern public transport systems will operate well and help cope with this problem. In addition to traffic, we think that the more industrialized the suburbs become, the more they will be polluted. Therefore, we really hope that the government and the local authorities of the suburbs will work closely together to find the best solutions to these problems and support sustainable development.

As the capital city of Thailand for over 200 years, Bangkok has an important role to play. Its growth is the world’s window on the growth of Thailand. Its urbanisation rate has increased gradually over the past 50 years, bringing apparent and wide-ranging benefits to the country. These include economic, social and cultural ones. In terms of economic benefits, the national income statistics have shown that Bangkok and the surrounding areas usually generate more than 50% of the gross domestic product. Regarding the social benefits, Bangkok’s inhabitants have access to better services and facilities compared to any other area of the country. Moreover, as a national centre of art and culture, Bangkok provides many opportunities and facilities for leisure and sport activities, and entertainment.

However, urbanisation has also resulted in massive problems. For example, thousands of migrants live in the modern slums surrounded by poverty, crime and drugs, and with no hope of getting a job. Traffic congestion is another big problem in the city whose road system is unable to cope with the increased number of cars. The traffic congestion combined with the large concentration of factories has severely affected the air and water quality. Despite the problems, Bangkok still continues to attract more and more migrants every year. The problems of traffic congestion, pollution and urban slums will continue to grow worse if the government does not take any measures to reduce the negative effects of urbanisation.
