1. Read a conversation between two friends about life in big cities. What features do they mention? Are they positive or negative?
Minh:
Ha, I don’t know why so many people are moving from their home villages to big cities these days! They’ve become so overcrowded.
Ha:
Yeah, I agree. They’re really overpopulated. But lots of people still want to become city dwellers.
Minh:
Well, I’m quite happy in my home village. It’s important that some people stay in rural areas and work in agriculture.
Ha:
But there are more employment opportunities in the city. Don’t you want to get a high-paying job in an office instead of working on your parents’ farm? Your standard of living will be higher in the city.
Minh:
I’m not sure; not everyone is lucky. Big cities are flooded with people from rural areas. Many of them are jobless and have to live in slums. I’d rather live in my village.
Ha:
You’re right. It’s essential that the government should build big cities and upgrade the infrastructure in rural areas.

Minh:

* Sample 1:
Hello everyone. On behalf of my group, I would like to present to you my group's ideas. After discussing, we come to the conclusion that we like life in the big city more than that in the countryside for a number of reasons. Firstly, jobs are more available in big cities. If we have a good educational background, work experience and a hard-working attitude, the chance that we can find a well-paying job with good working conditions is very high. Secondly, living in big cities is a lot more interesting and fun. There's a lot of entertainment for us to enjoy after a hard day of work or during the weekend. We can go to the cinemas, shopping malls, theatres, museums or join in cultural events that we can't experience in rural areas. There're also a lot of gyms with swimming pools and other sports facilities that satisfy people who are keen on sports. Lastly, living in big cities, people can enjoy better education, public transportation, and health care service. In short, for the above reasons, we prefer living in big cities over the countryside.
* Sample 2
* Sample 2:
Hi guys! Our group has four members. We all agree that rural life is better than urban life. First of all, do all of you guys notice that the cost of living in the countryside is much lower than that in cities? For example, today we have a bunch of bananas that one member of our group bought when she was at her hometown. Surprisingly, it only cost 15,000 dong. However, in Ha Noi yesterday I bought quite the same bunch of bananas that cost me 30,000 dong. Many other goods are also cheaper in the countryside than in cities. Another thing that we like about rural life is people's friendliness and helpfulness. Villagers live next to one another. They are quite friendly, honest and kind to other people. Furthermore, the atmosphere in the countryside is much cleaner and more peaceful than that in cities. My grandparents live in a small rural village. I sometimes visit them at the weekend. The happy feeling of lying on green fields watching birds and kites flying high to the sky lingers on my mind every time I go there. I enjoy going fishing in a river in the near village and love eating the fresh fish I catch there. In cities, I have never had that experience. Nowadays, transportation is much improved so that people in the countryside can easily travel to cities to enjoy modern and convenient things that cities offer. Thanks to these positive things, we really love going back to live in rural areas.
