Sentences: simple and compound
1. Simple sentence
A simple sentence has the most basic elements that make it a sentence: a subject, a verb, and a completed thought.
Examples are given below:
Joe waited for the train. The train was late. Mary and Samantha took the bus. I looked for Mary and Samantha at the bus station.
Notes:
A simple sentence can also be referred to as an independent clause. It is referred to as "independent" because, while it might be part of a compound or complex sentence, it can also stand by itself as a complete sentence.

2. Compound Sentences
A compound sentence is a sentence that contains two or more simple sentences joined by a conjuntion.
Examples are given below:
The boys sang and the girls danced. You may watch TV or you can go out to play. He took the test several times but he couldn’t pass. She was angry, still she kept her cool.
Notes:
The words "however", "therefore" and "nevertheless" are not conjunctions. They cannot be used to connect two independent clauses.

Complex sentences
1. Complex sentences includes one independent clause, and one (or more) dependent clause. The dependent clause can go before or after the independent clause.
- If the dependent clause goes before the independent clause, it is followed by a comma (,).
Example:
While the elephant are racing, people cheer to encourage them.
