Unit 07. Pollution Lesson 6. Skills 2 I. WARM-UP
Objectives:
Objectives - By the end of the lesson, Ss will be able to: Listen for specific information about thermal pollution Write about the causes and effects of one pollution type Develop Ss’ listening and writing skills Let`s see a video:
II. LISTENING
Listening 1:
Describe what you see in the pictures and talk about the relationship between them. 1. - Suggested answer:
Describe what you see in the pictures and talk about the relationship between them - Do you know:
Do you know about thermal pollution? Thermal pollution is dumping of heated gases or heated wastewater (often from electrical generating plants) into the air or water. - Look at the pcitures:
Thermal pollution include the ways in which air and water become hotter as a result of artificial stimuli. One example is a lake overheating because of a nearby factory Listening 2:
2. Listen to part of a conversation on TV between a reporter and an environmentalist about thermal pollution. Complete the diagram. Use no more than three words for each blank. - Suggested answer:
CAUSES - Power plants using water to (3) ________________ equipment - Discharge of cold water into (4) __________________ CAUSES - Building cooling towers to (10) __________ the water EFFECTS - (5) ____________ decreasing oxygen - Less oxygen harming (6) _____________ - (7) ________ algal blooms being another effect - Can change (8) __________ of the water and (9) __________ fish Thermal pollution: - Definition: Water getting (1) ___________ or (2)_______________________. hotter cooler cool warm rivers Warm water fish populations Harmful colour poison cool down - Audio script:
Audio script: Reporter: Does thermal pollution mean that bodies of water get hotter, Mr Nam? Mr Nam: Not always. Sometime the water becoms colder, and that`s also thermal pollution. In general, thermal pollution menas a change in the water temperature. Reporter: That`s interesting! What causes it? Mr Nam: Power station are one factor. They use water in the nearby lakes or rivers to cool their equipment, which heats up the water. Then they dump the hot water back into its source. Reporter: Are there any other causes? Mr Nam: Yes. Thermal pollution may also happen due to the discharge of cold water from reservoirs into warm rivers. Reporter: Thermal pollution can have dramatic effects. Right? Mr Nam: Certainly. Most aquatic creatures need a certian temperature to survive. Warmer water has less oxygen in it, and this can harm fish populations. Besides, warmer water can cause harmful algal blooms. This can change the colour of the water like in the first pciture and, more seriously, the algal poisons the fish. Reporter: What can we do , Mr Nam? Mr Nam: In many places, they buil cooling tower like in the second pciture to cool down the water form power stations. Reporter: Anything else we can do?... III. WRITING
Writing 1:
3. Work in pairs. Discuss the causes and effects of one type of pollution in your are. Make notes in the diagram. - Suggested answer:
Discuss the causes and effects of one type of pollution in your are. Make notes in the diagram. Water the contamination of water bodies Human (the disease), kill aquatic animals and plants, destruction of ecosystems Industrial waste, sewage, pesticides and herbicides Writing 2:
4. Imagine that you two are writing an article for the local newspaper about a type of pollution in your area. One of you writes about the causes and the other writes the effects of the pollution type you have just discussed in 3. - Suggested answer:
Causes of Water Pollution There are many causes lead to water pollution. Here are some the main causes: The first is industrial waste which dump from the factories. The toxic chemicals will change the color of water, increase the amount of minerals, change the temperature of water. The sewage and waste water that is produced by each household is chemically treated and released into sea with fresh water. The sewage water carries harmful bacteria and chemicals that can cause serious health problems. Pesticides and herbicides are used by farmers to protect crops from insects and weeds. They are useful for the plants growth. However, when these chemicals are mixed up with water produce harmful for plants and animals. Also, when it rains, the chemicals mixes up with rainwater and flow down into rivers and canals which pose serious damages for aquatic animals. - Suggested answer:
Effects of Water Pollution The effects of water pollution are varied and depend on what chemicals are dumped and in which locations. The main problem caused by water pollution is that it kills life that depends on these water bodies. Dead fish, crabs, birds and sea gulls, dolphins, and many other animals often wind up on beaches, killed by pollutants in their habitat (living environment). Humans are affected by this process as well. People can get diseases such as hepatitis by eating seafood that has been poisoned. In many poor nations, there is always outbreak of cholera and diseases as a result of poor drinking water treatment from contaminated waters. Ecosystems (the interaction of living things in a place, depending on each other for life) can be severely changed or destroyed by water pollution. Many areas are now being affected by careless human pollution, and this pollution is coming back to hurt humans in many ways. Writing 3:
5. Read each other`s work and put them together to make a complete article. IV. THE END
Homework:
HOMEWORK Listen again the audios Prepare for next lesson (find the meaning of the new words in the next lesson) Do Writing 3 (taks 5) Do exercise (student’sbook) Goodbye:
