    Unit 05. Inventions Lesson 3. Reading * INTRODUCE
    1. Objectives:
    Objectives * By the end of the lesson, students will be able to: - Read for general ideas and specific information about natural world as inspiration for inventions - Do the tasks: Match the words with their meaning, answer the questions and work in groups. 2. Let`s see a video:
    6 Inventions Inspired By Nature I. READING
    * New words:
    * New words - velcro (n): khoá ven-crô (cái khoá của áo quần.. gồm có hai dải bằng sợi ni lông, một nhám một trơn, khi ép lại sẽ dính chặt nhau) - hook and loop (n): Băng gai nhám - cling (v): dính vào, bám vào - numerous (adj): đông, nhiều * Reading: Wonderful nature:
    Wonderful nature People often use the natural world as inspiration for their inventions. By observing animals and plants, they design new products to serve humans. Here are some examples. Animals can do many things humans cannot, like flying or staying underwater for a long time. The aeroplane, with its wings and shape imitating those of a bird, is one of the greatest inventions in our history. Thanks to it, people can travel long distances in the air. This has helped to develop trade and toirism. The submarine, which can travel underwater, imitates a dolphin`s shape. Submarines are very useful for scientists to learn about the undersea world. Plants around us are also great sources of ideas for other wonderful inventions. The self-cleaning glass window and the fabric used to make umbrellas are both inspired by the smooth leaves of a lotus plant, with their ability to wash away dirt in the rain. Another product is Velcro. This hook-and-loop fastener was invented after a Swiss engineer observed how the seeds of a plant clung to his clothing. He then made two fabrics stick together thanks to the hooks on one surface and the loop on the other. Since then, Velcro has gradually become a familiar fastener for shoes, jackets, and even spacesuits. It is definitely true that nature has inspired numerous inventions and technologies. Scientists and inventors have tries to imitate something in nature in an effort to create better, stronger, safer tools and devices for our everyday life. 1. Discuss the ideas with a partner:
    1. Discuss the ideas with a partner What can the animals or the leaves in the pictures do that people can`t? Name some things people have invented to make up for what they cannot do? * Suggested answer the questions:

    5. Work in groups:
    5. Work in groups Which of the four inventions mentioned in the text is the best imitations of nature? State your reasons. The four inventions mentioned in the text is: Airplane Submarine Self-cleaning glass window and fabric used to make umbrellas Verco Airplane is the best imitation of nature. Because, traveling by air has proved to be much better. To get to other foreign destinations faster. To develop trade and tourism. * Invention of Airplane:
    Airplane is one of the 5 most important inventions of all time Traveling by ship was okay. But traveling by air has proved to be much better. To get to other foreign destinations faster, the best way today is by plane and we owe it to the Wright brothers who had invented it back in 1903 when they had successfully made the first sustained flight. Abbas Ibn Firnas back in the 9th century had made his own attempts but they weren’t able to last. Only the Wright brothers were able to give way to the birth of the modern winged aircrafts. * Invention of Hook and Loop:
    * Invention of Hook and Loop In 1948, a Swiss mountaineer named George de Mestral was walking through the woods and was very frustrated by the burs that clung to his clothes. While picking them off, he realized that it may be possible to use this principle to make a fastener to compete with the zipper. Everyone laughed at him, except for a weaver at a textile plant in France. Together, they designed what they called "locking tape". It was made from cotton. The biggest problem that they faced was mass producing it. Sophisticated equipment was needed. He searched for a solution. Accidentally, de Mestral discovered that nylon, when sewn under infrared light, formed indestructible hooks, and the design was finished. Next problem - the name. Somehow `hookless fastener` or `locking tape` did not seem right. If I were there, I would have suggested a name like `man made bur tape that sticks to the other side and fastens things together` - a much catchier name. He liked the sound of "vel" from velvet and "cro" from the French word crochet (meaning hook). And the name Velcro® stuck, just like those annoying burs. (their legal department wants you to know that Velcro is a trademarked name of Velcro USA and not a generic name - in other words, they don`t make the hook and loop fasteners - they make Velcro. * THE END
